For every gem in each color, the jewelcrafter can learn several different cuts, and each final combination of traits will earn different bonuses. Placing cut gems into an item's sockets is what will add the bonus powers to those of the chosen item; matching socket and gemstone colors will make this bonus power even more magnified. This adds new dimensions to WoW characters, as they can customize their equipment to better suit their individual style or the different roles their class can fulfill. As you may have already surmised, at the higher levels your bag of tricks becomes greatly enhanced by your array of specially cut gemstones and socketed items, especially since armor and weaponry alike can have sockets. In the Burning Crusade, any character will be able to fit a gemstone into a socket.
