Herbalism is used by alchemy mainly, and by inscribers too, but the market there is not as huge, it doesn't have that profit potential. The other thing you need is to know which items you can sell by nice gold even if you are at low levels. For example, near the beginning (for alliance) there are mobs that drop quite well elemental airs, elemental waters... Very well, these things can be sold by 1 gold each at the auction house. We are talking of low level mobs which can be killed easily even by low level players, which drop items with huge profit potential. By selling only 20 of them you have enough money for your first mount at level 20. Another way to earn big gold is by taking advantage of the pet market. If you know how, you can sell common pets at the auction house and earn a profit. For example, there are parrots in Stranglethorne Vale which you can buy cheap, and then sell them for 5 gold or more in Stormwind at the auction house.
